The Properties of Dust: Golgotha

Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Portland, Oregon. April 2, 2005. - www.aflitt.com

From The Properties of Dust

Too "controversial" for vocal.media, this one gets to live on Rubble...

On display for all to see
A dying man, ages past
Martyred upon the blasted, burning heights
Of Golgotha.

Sorrows drain from the taut man’s eyes
As carrion creatures pull at his muscles
As insects burrow into his fingernails
As birds shit on his limp figure
As dogs watch, awaiting his revival
As serene sirens tempt others to
Believe.

I wash my hands.

Upon death’s playground, bodies rot;
Skulls dry and a man dies,
His tears falling upon the thirsty dust
Of ancient monuments and bones,
To be carried by a low
And shifting wind towards
Eternity.

The Properties of Dust was a small book I put together in 2005 for a desktop publishing class at Portland State University. Many of these pieces were written specifically for the book project, and the rest date back to as early as 1990. The pieces were accompanied by a photo or two in the original book, but, in most cases, I am using different, more recent, photos with this series of posts.
