National Monuments in Danger

We are down to the final days of the comment period!  Please, take the time today to comment on the fate of this national monument, any of the other 27 monuments on the Interior Department's list, or on the fate of all of them.

To comment on the monument review process (due July 10, 2017):

I figured this would happen... As soon as I published my last post on Berryessa Snow Mountain, Brent Rose dropped his video on the monument.  So, two-for-one posts on this monument today!

As I wrote in the last post, I just barely missed this one last year, pretty much because I didn't know it was there.  In Rose's post today, he points out that this is a huge problem with these monuments in general, and, I'd suggest, why they are in so much danger compared to the National Park Service sites.

Rose writes:

I grew up in the Bay Area, with this place just a couple hours away, and I really had no idea about the incredible stuff this place had. That's one of the things I keep hearing from people about these monuments, actually. They aren't nearly as well-known as our National Parks and typically they lack the funds to advertise and promote the unique things they have to offer. They're the indie-label of outdoor spaces, basically. Hipsters should love these places. I hope this project inspires a few people to visit these public lands and experience them first-hand.

I felt the same way he did about this monument while working on the earlier post, and this is the way I feel about these monuments in general!

The quote below was from the last post, but I'll stick in in here again because, well, you know...

Calling Berryessa Snow Mountain “a stunning place,” Brent Rose said his recent visit to the local site whose National Monument status is threatened by the Trump Administration, was not what he expected.

Described as a millennial Charles Kuralt, Rose recently set out to visit all 22 of the National Monuments that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is evaluating for possible de-classification. He made it to Berryessa on Tuesday.

“The first thing I did upon arriving was to drive up Walker Ridge Road to get to an overlook,” he said. “I was expecting more or less barren land, but I was shocked by the incredible diversity of vegetation. Manzanita with bright red skin, and cypress in varieties I’ve never seen.”
